Bang (Silver Fang) – How Strong Is the Old Martial Arts Master?

In a world of espers, cyborgs and monsters the size of mountains, one of the strongest heroes in One Punch Man is an 81-year-old man in a martial arts gi. Bang, better known by his hero name Silver Fang, held the number three spot in the S-Class with nothing but his fists, his footwork and decades of training. He has no psychic powers, no mechanical parts and no monster cells. So just how strong is the old master really, and how would he fare against the series’ heaviest hitters? Let’s look at his abilities, his best feats and the limits that come with age.

Who Is Silver Fang?

Bang is the founder of the Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist, a style he created himself, and is often called a living treasure of the martial arts world. Before the events of the story, his dojo trained more than a hundred students. That changed when his most gifted disciple, Garou, beat up his fellow students and was expelled. Most of the others left, leaving Bang with only the loyal Charanko.

Despite his serious face, Bang is warm and playful. He jokes in dangerous situations, visits Saitama to share hot pot, and is one of the very few heroes who understands how strong Saitama really is after watching him destroy the falling meteor. He is also one of the rare people who can calm down Tatsumaki.

His Martial Arts

Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist

Bang’s signature style works like a calm stream that turns into a raging river. He flows around attacks, redirects the opponent’s force, and then finishes with a blow powerful enough to shatter stone. Genos calls it the perfect blend of offence and defence, and it is often compared to real-world tai chi. Its key techniques include:

  • Water Stream Encampment: A zone in which his fists destroy anything that enters, used to protect Genos from meteor fragments.
  • Allsight: Trained eyesight and anticipation that let him read and pierce even very fast opponents.
  • Awakening Breath: A breathing technique that temporarily pushes his body to its limits, raising both strength and durability.

The Exploding Heart Release Fist

Bang was not always a gentle master. As a young man, he relied on a brutally offensive style, the Exploding Heart Release Fist, and used his talent to crush opponents without mercy. His older brother Bomb, the master of the Whirlwind Iron Cutting Fist, defeated him and set him straight. Bang locked away the old style and created the Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist as a martial art for protecting others. Many fans see this as the key to understanding him: his current style is not just a technique, it is a promise never to become that young man again.

His Most Impressive Feats

  • Against Melzargard: A direct hit that tore off Iaian’s arm sends Bang crashing through concrete, yet he gets up joking that his stiff shoulders feel better (Chapter 34). He also outruns other S-Class heroes, leaving even Atomic Samurai wondering how he is so fast.
  • Against Elder Centipede: Together with Bomb, his combined technique knocks back the giant Dragon-level monster and breaks the carapace that withstood Metal Knight’s missiles and Metal Bat’s bat (Chapter 85).
  • Sparring with Superalloy Darkshine: Bang avoids and deflects all of Darkshine’s attacks and gains the upper hand, and the two are described as twin pillars of the hero world (Chapter 130).
  • Gums and Fuhrer Ugly: During the Monster Association raid, Bang faces two Dragon-level monsters at once, kicks a hole through Gums and turns Fuhrer Ugly’s attacks against both of them (Chapter 149). The original web version of the story shows him finishing both even more decisively.
  • Against monsterized Garou: Even after Garou has evolved through countless battles, Bang fights him on equal terms for a long stretch and sometimes takes the lead, before finally being defeated (Chapters 153 to 158).

Garou himself, who fought Demon-level monsters like Bug God and Royal Ripper, admits that those threats pale next to his old master.

Holding Back: The Strength He Refuses to Use

One of the most interesting debates about Bang is how much stronger he could be. Bang is gentle by nature and fights with a strict rule against killing, holding back far more often than he lets loose. Many readers argue that this restraint makes him look weaker than he truly is.

The clearest example comes in his fight with Garou. Even when Garou pushes him into a corner, Bang refuses to use the Exploding Heart Release Fist, because it reminds him of the person he used to be (Chapter 155). A popular reading is that Bang lost that fight partly by choice. He wanted to stop his disciple as a teacher, not destroy him as a killer.

The Limits of Age

For all his skill, Bang is past his physical prime. He tires faster than he once did, and he openly admits that he could run much farther when he was younger. His style is also defensive at heart: against enemies with enormous durability or regeneration, redirecting attacks is not always enough. During the meteor crisis, he could only destroy fragments; stopping the meteor itself was beyond martial arts.

That is why most fans place him below Tatsumaki and Blast, but among the strongest heroes outside them. His power is not raw destruction but precision, experience and endurance. Even after his battle with Garou, he is one of the last heroes left standing when Garou’s cosmic energy floods the area (Chapter 171).

Life After the Monster Association

After the Monster Association arc, Bang retires from the Hero Association, taking responsibility as Garou’s master. The manga gives this a hopeful twist: Bang and Garou reconcile, and the former Hero Hunter starts training under him again, with Bang hinting at a future “second Silver Fang”. The man who was once saved by his brother now gives his own disciple the same second chance.

Conclusion

Silver Fang is one of the strongest pure martial artists in One Punch Man. He can overpower Dragon-level monsters, outclass heroes like Darkshine in a spar and stand toe to toe with an evolving Garou, all at 81 years old. His true ceiling may be even higher, hidden behind a style he locked away and a promise he refuses to break.

If Bang ever unleashed the Exploding Heart Release Fist without holding back, how high do you think he could climb in the S-Class rankings?
