Yuta Okkotsu – Is He the True Successor to Gojo?

For most of Jujutsu Kaisen, one name sat at the very top of the jujutsu world: Satoru Gojo. When the strongest sorcerer finally fell in the Shinjuku Showdown, fans immediately asked who could possibly fill that empty seat. The answer most people gave was Yuta Okkotsu, the shy protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 who grew into a special grade monster. He shares Gojo’s blood, he was praised by Gojo himself, and by the end of the story he even leads the Gojo clan. But is Yuta truly Gojo’s successor, or is he something different altogether? Let’s look at the evidence on both sides.

Who Is Yuta Okkotsu?

Yuta first appears as a frightened boy haunted by the curse of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto. Because Rika’s rampages were so destructive, the jujutsu higher-ups sentenced him to death, and only Gojo’s intervention postponed the execution. Gojo enrolled him at Tokyo Jujutsu High, where Maki trained him with a katana and Toge, Panda and Maki became his first real friends.

After defeating Suguru Geto, Yuta learned the truth: Rika had not cursed him, he had cursed her, unable to accept her death. Gojo also revealed that Yuta descends from Sugawara no Michizane, one of the most powerful sorcerers in history, which makes him a distant relative of Gojo himself. Yuta then left Japan to train abroad and only returned to the main story after the Shibuya Incident (Chapter 137).

The Case for Yuta as Gojo’s Successor

Gojo Said It Himself

Early in the series, Gojo explains his dream of reforming the rotten jujutsu world by raising strong allies, and he singles out two upperclassmen as the students he is counting on most: Kinji Hakari and Yuta Okkotsu (Chapter 11). On more than one occasion he states that Yuta has the potential to surpass him. Coming from the man who called himself the strongest, that is a remarkable endorsement.

A Toolkit With Almost No Ceiling

  • Enormous cursed energy: Yuta’s reserves are often described as even larger than Gojo’s, a gift many link to his Sugawara blood.
  • Copy: Through Rika, Yuta can reproduce other sorcerers’ techniques, from Toge’s Cursed Speech to far more exotic abilities.
  • Healing others: He is one of the very few sorcerers who can use reverse cursed technique on other people, not just on himself.
  • His own domain: Authentic Mutual Love first appears in the Sendai Colony fight (Chapter 178) and is fully revealed against Sukuna (Chapter 249). It fills the space with countless katanas, each one holding a copied technique.

On top of that, Yuta is the last surviving special grade sorcerer once Geto, Yuki Tsukumo and Gojo are gone. In terms of rank alone, the title of strongest passes to him by default.

He Accepted the Role of the Monster

The most striking argument comes in Chapter 261. Before the final battle, Yuta proposed copying Kenjaku’s body-swapping technique so he could fight in Gojo’s body if Gojo died. His allies rejected the idea, because it would almost certainly kill him. Yuta’s answer was that Gojo had always been forced to carry the burden of being a monster alone, and that if nobody else had the guts to do it, he would become the monster himself.

He then took over Gojo’s body, gaining Limitless, the Six Eyes and Unlimited Void, and faced Sukuna with Gojo’s own power. Many fans see this as the moment the torch was passed, both literally and symbolically.

Head of the Gojo Clan

The epilogue in the final volume confirms what many expected. Years after the Shinjuku Showdown, records list Yuta as the acting head of the Gojo clan, and decades later his grandchildren are still connected to the family. With no Six Eyes user left and the clan built entirely around one man, a distant relative who was also Gojo’s favourite student was the natural choice.

Why Yuta Is Not Simply “the Next Gojo”

His Strength Is Borrowed

Gojo’s power lived inside him: Limitless and the Six Eyes were his own. Yuta’s greatest weapons depend on Rika. She acts as external storage for his copied techniques, and he can only stay fully connected to her for five minutes at a time. Some analyses point out that the official fanbook simply names his technique after Rika, which underlines how much of his strength comes through that bond rather than from him alone.

Even in Gojo’s Body, He Was Not Gojo

Yuta’s time in Gojo’s body was a desperate, short-lived gamble. When the borrowed technique ran out, he collapsed, and he only survived because Rika had kept his original body alive with reverse cursed technique the entire time (Chapter 269). Maki then scolds him for the reckless plan. Gojo needed no one to catch him; Yuta did, and the story treats that as a strength rather than a weakness.

Head to Head, Most Fans Still Pick Gojo

  • Domains: Unlimited Void paralyses anyone caught inside it, while Authentic Mutual Love is not lethal by itself. Its power lies in the techniques Yuta can pull from it.
  • Infinity: Most of Yuta’s copied techniques simply stop at Gojo’s barrier. Only a guaranteed-hit technique that cancels cursed techniques, like Jacob’s Ladder, would give him a real winning path.
  • Efficiency: Thanks to the Six Eyes, Gojo wastes almost no cursed energy, so he can outlast almost anyone, Yuta included.

Gojo Never Wanted a Copy of Himself

There is also a thematic argument. Gojo’s dream was never to find a single replacement; it was to raise a generation of sorcerers strong enough that no one would have to stand alone at the top. Yuji, Megumi, Maki, Hakari and Yuta together are the real answer to that dream. When Yuta tells Gojo that he does not have to be a monster alone, he is not imitating his teacher. He is rejecting the loneliness that defined him.

Conclusion

In rank, bloodline and responsibility, Yuta Okkotsu is clearly Gojo’s successor. He is the last special grade standing, the student Gojo believed in most, and the man who ended up leading the Gojo clan. Yet he is a very different kind of strongest. Gojo was the honoured one who stood alone; Yuta’s power has always come from his bonds, from Rika to the friends who refused to let him throw his life away.

Perhaps that is the real inheritance Gojo left behind: not the title of strongest, but the hope that the next strongest would never have to be alone. Do you think Yuta truly carried on Gojo’s legacy, or did he create a legacy that is entirely his own?
